“We often ask the abstract painters what they meant to represent or say. Poets are rarely ask this type of questions, both are simply trying to express  reactions, sensations, and feelings inspired by society, current events, close relations, etc.

Today I paint because it is the only way for me to slip into the present moment, to intuitively express my reactions to the facts, to the environment, to the feelings created or aroused by the current events using color and body movements . ” Danièle Petit

This was great fun. Professor Jerry Toupin’s enthusiasm was greatly appreciated by his audience at the opening of the exhibit “Les Sciences de la Terre et de 100203_toupin_23_cwpl’Atmosphère / Earth and Atmospheric Sciences” last Wednesday. “It was fascinating. I did not know a rock could float!” said one patron. Want to know what a stereoscope is for? Or what mineral is use to make mirrors, matches? How about how to measure wind and precipitation? Then this exhibit is a must-see.

What’s going on at the Bibliothèque Saint-Jean (BSJ?) Last Thursday was the opening of the 5th exhibit of the year “Où s’en vont vos magazines?” or “Where do your magazines go?”, an exhibit of paintings and collages created by Sylvia Grist’s skillful hands to celebrate Alberta’s diversified landscapes.

100114_grist_18_cwpJasmine Lamarre, from the new environmental sustainability committee at Campus Saint-Jean, was the guest speaker at the opening. She linked the environmental efforts made by artist Sylvia Grist to what the new committee intends to do at the campus.

Bibliothèque Saint-Jean was able to get in touch with the 100114_grist_25_cwpartist through the CAVA (Centre d’art visuel de l’Alberta). Born in the French city of Nice, Sylvia Grist started cutting up magazine paper dolls when she was eight years old. After travelling in North America, she decided to move to Canada in 1983. Her art work captivates visitors. The exhibit includes a display table showing books from the library collection on the topics of environmental sustainability and decoupage.

The exhibit is opened for viewing during the library hours from January 14th to 31st . For more information, please call 780-465-8711.

OutsideNoiseThe Humanities and Social Sciences Library is currently hosting “Outside Noise,” an exhibition of works by members of the Student Design Association and the Visual Arts Student Association. This exhibition is part of International Week, February 1-5, 2010.

The University of Alberta Augustana Campus Library is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009 information literacy awards:

Teaching Faculty Award for the Support of Information Literacy: Dr. Janet Wesselius, Assistant Professor of Philosophy.

Nancy Goebel, Augustana Head Librarian and Chair of the Award Committee noted that “Dr. Wesselius’ interest in excellence in undergraduate teaching and learning provides many opportunities for strategic collaboration with librarians to address information literacy in the various Philosophy courses that she teaches.” In December 2009, Dr. Wesselius was also awarded the Augustana Faculty Teaching Award.

Initiated in 2005, this annual award is given to an Augustana Campus teaching faculty member who has contributed consistently and notably to the promotion of information literacy at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta.  Nominations are accepted from Augustana students, staff, faculty and administrators.

The award was presented to Dr. Wesselius at the 9th Annual Augustana Information Literacy in Academic Libraries Workshop. See here for information on the award.

Student Award for Library Research: Amy Wilhelm

Amy’s submission for the award was based on library research conducted for her paper, “The Evolution of Sustainable Development,” written for Dr. Glynnis Hood’s AUENV 324. The Award Committee was very impressed with Amy’s thoughtful and thorough research, and her insightful reflections on her research process.  See here for information on the award.

Additional information:
The Augustana Campus Library’s information literacy initiatives provide opportunities for the Augustana community to learn how to find and use library and information resources, crucial skills for success both at university and throughout life.
