WISEST – Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology “was founded in 1982 with a mandate to investigate the reasons why few young women are choosing careers in the sciences and engineering, to take action to alter the situation, and to work to increase the percentage of women in decision-making roles in all fields of scholarship.”
This week 600 Grade 6 girls experienced eye-opening experiments in chemistry, biology and engineering, complements of volunteers from WISEST.(Express News, Feb.17, 2010)
The WISEST Summer Research Program provides an opportunity for young men and women who have completed Grade 11 to gain first hand information about different science and engineering disciplines. Participation in this program will help students to broaden their awareness of career opportunities and will encourage them to consider a future in the research culture.
Participants in the program will work as paid research assistants on a project in an area that is non-traditional for their gender for six weeks in July and August.
